(Single from album, "Jutty Ranx")
Complete with pretentious stop-motion animation music video, Jutty Ranx’s funky new indie release begins with a drumbeat that bears uncanny resemblance to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and which is later embellished with a thick, enveloping bass-line that guides the synthesiser overtone powerfully through the bulk of this broad-shouldered, deep funk song. A sweet touch here is the higher-pitched, more chart-friendly vocal that rescues from the song from the forgettable disco bargain bin, home to classic, deep-throated soul-diva musical murmurings. Another is the tempo change at around 2:20, as a small dub-step portion of song takes an unprecedented though exceptionally groovy 30 seconds-or-so of the limelight. Unlike Neon jungle’s track, there’s no compromise here at all – it’s an awesome song, and a great reminder of how old genres can be warmed up in the musical microwave and enjoyed by the masses, time and time again, without a compromise in quality that is fast becoming a trait of thematic sonic revivals.
